FCAAIA is now offering a new test for asthma called FeNO (fractional exhaled nitric oxide). FeNO is a marker of airway inflammation that can be elevated in asthma and nasal allergies.  Checking FeNO to get a “baseline” or “personal best” is useful for comparison when monitoring changes in treatment and to determine if asthma might be contributing to your coughing illness.

Just like pulmonary function tests, FeNO is a useful tool in the care of patients with asthma. It does not give “black and white” answers but adds that much more information to aid decision making.

FeNO is not currently covered by all insurance companies.
